Manitoba Foundation for Sports – Milt Stegall Scholarship

Sport Manitoba is pleased to advise potential recipients that application for Manitoba Foundation for Sports Scholarships including the recently created Milt Stegall Scholarships are now available online on the Sport Manitoba website.

Manitoba Foundation for Sport Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school students entering a post secondary institution and to students in their second or subsequent year in a post secondary institution. The top applicant in each category will be awarded the Manitoba Foundation for Sports Milt Stegall Scholarship.

In recognition of the Winnipeg Blue Bomber receiver’s contributions to the community, The Province of Manitoba, Sport Manitoba and the Manitoba Foundation for Sports will provide a scholarship of $1,000 to a graduating high school student entering a post secondary institution and $2,000 to a student in their second or subsequent year in a post secondary institution in the name of Stegall, who is the Canadian Football League’s all-time leader for touchdowns.

The number of other scholarship amounts will be dependent on annual funds available for distribution.

The Manitoba Foundation for Sports scholarship program administrated by Sport Manitoba was established to support young athletes of Sport Manitoba partners, who continue to participate in amateur sport while pursuing a post secondary education on a full time basis. The Manitoba Foundation for Sports Scholarship Program was established in 1992. The Foundation has since awarded 880 scholarships totaling $683,417.

The program’s emphasis is placed on athletes who have competed at the provincial level or higher during 2007, and who have maintained a high level of academic standing, while showing a commitment to amateur sport through their involvement in coaching, officiating and volunteer activities. The number of scholarships awarded annually will vary, based on the number of applicants and the funds available for distribution. Preference will be given to athletes attending university or college in Manitoba and enrolled in a related field, pursing a career in sport.


 Manitoba Open Freeskate Bursary Award

A Bursary of up to $1,000 is established for an event at a Manitoba competition, to be announced in the Manitoba Open FreeSkate Competition Technical Package.  The funds (maximum of $500.00 per event) will be allocated from the club raffle funds, under the guidelines established by the Championships/Events Committee.

Ian Carmichael Award

Ian Carmichael was a competitive skater in Manitoba who progressed into the judging ranks following his skating career.  Dedicated to the sport he loved, he soon advanced to the Gold Test level and traveled the province, judging competitions and tests.  A dentist by profession, Ian was always concerned with self improvement and continued to study and upgrade, both professionally and within the sport until just prior to his tragic death in 1992.
 
Ian made a most generous bequest to the Manitoba Section, Skate Canada.  The Board of Directors recommended that a monetary Award be made annually using the interest from this money. The recipient should be an individual who is showing commitment and dedication, both to the sport of figure skating and to further education.
 
Criteria:
The Recipient should be:
1) A skater or ex-skater in any discipline between the ages of 16 and 25 years, who has achieved at least their 2nd Figure, Junior Bronze Free, Junior Bronze Dance.
2) Is continuing in the sport as either a judge, accountant or coach and has attained any of the following minimum levels:
a) Judge  – Primary Evaluator and/or Novice Synchro
b) Data Specialist – Level I Data Specialist
c) Coach – Primary STARSkate Trained
3) Is currently attending and is seriously pursuing a post secondary education (at least 3 credits).
4) Has contributed significantly to the sport of figure skating in Manitoba for at least two years.
 
Nominations may come from any member of the Manitoba Section, Board of Directors or Skate Canada member clubs.

Sport Manitoba Athlete Assistance

Manitoba athletes striving to pursue excellence at the highest level of national and international competition are eligible to receive Sport Manitoba Athlete Assistance Funding Grant ranging from $250 to $1500 are available to individual athletes and teams based on their performance at their sports National Championship or their present status as a member of a National Team Program.  Application must be endorsed and forwarded to Sport Manitoba by the Provincial Sport Organization (Skate Canada Manitoba).If you feel you are eligible please contact the Section office.

Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship

The Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship Endowment Fund provides financial support for Manitoba’s High Performance athletes in their pursuit of excellence at the National and International Levels of competition while serving as a tribute to commemorate the Manitoba visit of Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal in 1999.The Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship awards two (2) scholarships per year valued up to $3,000 each to one make and one female high performance athlete enrolled in a post secondary institution in Manitoba.
The application process begins in the fall with an application deadline of mid-November.
