We will be highlighting some of our Skate Canada Challenge, High Performance & Development skaters. We will update the website postings following the postings on our various social media platforms. The postings will be in no particular order or category.
Ella Young is a member of our Skate Canada Manitoba High Performance Team. She is 14 years old and has been skating since she was four years old. Ella represents Skate Brandon and is coached by Tammy McKay and Laurie Bertholet. Her favorite piece of music to skate to is her current short program “Clap Your Hands” because it’s so upbeat and fun to skate to. Her favorite jump is the double lutz and her favorite skater is Kaetlyn Osmond. Ella enjoys playing softball, snowboarding, badminton and track and field. She also loves to spend time with friends. Ella won Sectionals last year in Pre Novice Women and represented Manitoba at Challenge in 2019.
Keith Lau is a member of our Skate Canada MB High Performance Team. He represents Skate Winnipeg and is coached by Kevin Dawe. Keith started skating when he was six years old. He likes to skateboard, ride his bike, run, and battle royales. Sneakers are one of his biggest interests and he enjoys various fashion brands. Keith’s favorite program so far has been his current long program to “Dancing on my own”. His favorite element is the double axel.
Davey Howes is a member of our Skate Canada MB High Performance Team. He started skating when he was three and represents Skate Winnipeg. Davey is coached by Kevin Dawe, Andrew Evans, Paul Parkinson and Tina Chen. He enjoys breakdancing, baseball, skiing, and baking. He has enjoyed all of his programs, because he likes to perform and to skate to different types of music. Davey’s skating role models are Yuzuru Hanyu, Nathan Chen, Patrick Chan and Elladj Balde. He has memorized the ISU Scale of Values. Davey represented Manitoba at Skate Canada Challenge in 2019.
Megan Dryden is a member of our Skate Canada MB High Performance Team. She competes in both singles and in pairs with her partner Wyatt James. Megan is coached by Patty Hole and Jody James and represents Skate Virden. Megan started skating when she was 5, and she loves to read and spend time outdoors and doing archery in her spare time. Her favorite program is her current singles long program to “Suis Moi”, and her favorite skater is Kristen Moore-Towers. Megan’s favorite element is the double toe. She has represented Manitoba in pairs at Skate Canada Challenge in both 2018 and 2019.
Ava Kemp is a member of our Skate Canada MB High Performance Team. She is 12 years old and is coached by Kevin Dawe. She started skating when she was three years old and her home club is Skate Winnipeg. Ava enjoys taking dance lessons and used to play soccer for Bonivital but no longer has time for that anymore. Her favorite programs so far have been “Belle”, her free program from last season and “Opportunity”, her current short program. Her favorite elements are the double axel and the layback spin. Ava is excited to try new things on the ice and loves learning new jumps.
Breken Brezden is a member of our Skate Canada MB High Performance Team. She is 15 years old and she is coached by Patricia Hole, Tammy McKay & Donna Kemp-Drysdale. Her home club is Skate Dauphin but she trains mostly out of Skate Virden (and sometimes Skate Brandon too). Breken began skating at the age of 4 and enjoys swimming at the lake, fishing and boating with her dad. She spends many hours in the car driving to train. Her favorite skaters are Kaetlyn Osmond and Alena Kostornaia. When asked what her favorite elements are, Breken replied “My favorite jumps are triple salchows and double flips, although I am really enjoying my footwork from both programs this year!”. Breken represented Manitoba at Skate Canada Challenge in 2018 and 2019 and also at Canada Games in 2019.
Wyatt James is a member of our High-Performance Team. He is 15 years old and competes in Singles & Pairs along with his partner Megan Dryden. Wyatt has been skating since he was 3 years old. He is a member of the Carman Skating Club and is coached by Jody James and Patricia Hole. Wyatt rides horses, enjoys hunting, and plays piano as well. His favorite skater is Kurt Browning because he is very entertaining and has awesome skating skills. Wyatt’s favorite skills are spread eagles and pair lifts. Wyatt and his partner Megan have attended Skate Canada Challenge as a Pre-Novice Pairs team in both 2018 and 2019
Yoni Elizarov has qualified for Skate Canada Challenge and is a member of our Skate Canada Manitoba High Performance Team. He is 17 years old and competes in Junior Men. Yoni is a member of Skate Winnipeg and is coached by Margo Russell. Yoni started skating when he was 8 years old and besides skating, he enjoys playing soccer, badminton, basketball, and video games. Yoni has qualified for the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in both 2018 and 2019. Yoni’s favorite program is his short new program called “Warriors”. His favorite skater is Yuzuru Hanyu as he is artistic and has really good jumps. Yoni’s favorite jump is the toe loop.
Danae Russell has qualified for Skate Canada Challenge. She is 20 years old and competes in Senior Women. Danae is a member of Century Skating Club and is coached by Margo Russell. She has been skating since she was 2 years old. Over the past year, Danae has become involved in fitness training as ice time has been extremely limited. Her interests outside of skating include playing games with her family, painting on canvas, coaching skating, and reading. Danae’s all-time favorite piece of music to skate to was Peter Pan. She loved the experiences she had with the program, such as going to Canada Games in 2015. Danae’s favorite skills are the death drop spin and the triple toe.
Emma King is a member of our High Performance Team and has qualified for Skate Canada Challenge. Her home club is Skate Winnipeg and her coach is Kevin Dawe. Emma is 18 years old and has been skating since she was 5 years old. Emma also enjoys indoor cycling and downhill skiing. Emma placed first at both the 2014 and 2018 Manitoba Winter Games. She also competed at the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Her favorite jump is the triple toe. Emma’s favourite skater is Alexandra Trusova because of all the quads that she can do. Emma’s favorite program that she has skated to so far has been her current long program to Moulin Rouge.
Chanel Cabak is a member of our High Performance Team and has qualified for Skate Canada Challenge. Chanel is 17 years old and has been skating since she was 4 years old. Her home club is Portage SC, though she trains mostly out of Calalta in Calgary. Her coaches are Jeff Langdon and Scott Davis. Besides skating, Chanel also enjoys track and field and basketball. Her favorite jump is the Triple Lutz. When we asked Chanel what her favorite program has been, she said “My favourite is my current long program which is from the musical Chicago. I just love skating to it and I always have so much fun in the program because it’s so upbeat and I really love the musical!”
