Skate Canada Manitoba is showcasing a number of our Section’s Coaches, who have graciously answered a number of questions to allow us all a small glimpse of who they are and what roles they have taken on within our Section.

Megan Foster is one of the Section’s CanSkate Resource team members and is a Provincial Certified, National Trained Professional Coach.  Megan is also a Certified Coach Developer with Skate Canada.  She has been coaching for over 15 years and coaches CanSkate, STARSkate, Synchro and CanPower. She became a coach because she wanted more time on the ice! She quickly discovered that working with skaters first learning how to skate was her favourite place to be. That love developed into an equal love for working with skaters and former skaters learning how to coach, and now coach courses are my favourite place to be!  Her favorite skater is Lee Chandler (Manitoba Proud!).  And her favorite skating performance for a long time was Jamie Sale and David Peltier’s Love Story, but Tessa and Scott captivated her with their 2010 Vancouver Games free program.  Skate Canada Manitoba thanks you for all that you have done and continue to do for skating in Manitoba!

Sarah Murkin-Debeuckelaere is the Skate Canada Manitoba Section Coaches Representative and is a member of our Board of Directors.  She is currently a Certified Regional Coach and has been coaching for 18 years.  Sarah coaches, CanSkate, STARSkate, CanPower and Synchro.  One of the highlights of her coaching career is to have attended the Skate Canada National Adult Skating Championships (twice) with one of her skaters.  She enjoyed watching Elvis Stojko’s performances when she was growing up, and now she loves watching the energy and comradery that Keegan Messing brings to his skating.  She started her coaching journey, her last year of high school when her club was in need of a coach to stay open, and she continues to coach for the excitement and joy of watching skaters grow and master skills.  Skate Canada Manitoba thanks you for all that you have done and continue to do for skating in Manitoba!

Meghan Rafferty is a member of the Skate Canada Manitoba CanSkate Resource Team and is a Provincial certified coach. She coaches singles, dance as well as synchro (in a non COVID year!).  Meghan has been coaching for 18 years and has taught well over 1000 students. She became a coach at 16 because she knew she was not ready to end her involvement in the sport, when she finished skating herself. She loves to work with athletes and watch them develop through their training to help them reach their potential. When asked what the highlight of her coaching career has been she states, starting up the club in Niverville as her number one, “It was so special to do that in my hometown to provide an opportunity to kids that was there for me when I was young. Watching the club grow into having 100+ kids in CanSkate, CanPower and have a synchro team compete at crocus, and having a skater represent the club at Sectionals was so exciting for me”. Thank you, Meghan for all you do!
